Having worked in the film industry, I saw the effort that photographers made to get their files ready for an editor. I can easily imagine that P1 folks have the same kind of systems they have used for years for their jobs, but that now they no longer have to pay for the software, and the raw file will be a lot better looking. Not being dependent on Adobe doesn’t mean that a raw file won’t need to be flattened and a selection made for later use. Or you could switch to Photoshop for that, or use Rawtherapee. Bottom line is that the move from charging for the programs to giving them away to anyone who wants will make Apple more money. C1 has a rather noisy user interface, similar to other RAW developers, not particularly customizable and definitely not friendly to others unless you know exactly what you’re doing. That’s why I won’t consider it a viable alternative. Adobe did a lot to speed up the UI, but as with most slow software, one can click around to eventually get where one’s trying to go. There are many other programs that do more, faster, and that are more customizable and friendlier to the uninitiated.
In the end, it all comes down to trust. Do you trust that what you see when you click a button will indeed produce the result you want? If you do, then it’s well worth the money. If not, you might find yourself spending even more to get what you need. As to what your money buys, C1 is definitely more than enough to make me comfortable at this point.
