Paint.NET has many powerful tools. However, I feel you need to use them carefully. There are lots of big buttons, and a click of the + or – zoom icons can have a drastic effect on your image. To zoom out, click the little up arrow on the toolbar, for zoom in, click the little down arrow. If you try to use the brush icon, youll find that you cant zoom in with it, and the brush is way bigger than you thought it would be. If you want to zoom out, there is the the zoom slider, which adjusts the zoom level. You have to do this on a separate dialog box, which has a similar interface, and when you want to undo the operation, click Undo in the toolbar, or press Ctrl+Z. Only the brush and zoom icon have undo abilities.

As long as you stay away from the complicated tasks, you will find a lot of satisfying features within Paint.NET. When I first used the app, I was pleasantly surprised to see the ability to toggle layers on and off and place a layer atop another layer. Additionally, its also possible to create and edit mask bitmaps and edit selections with precision and ease. I couldnt find any form of measurement tools, but I was able to crop and trim images and adjust the image sizes and dpi. The tools I used the most were notepad, file and folder tools, the color picker (which wasnt particularly intuitive), and the tools that combine shapes and outlines (the ellipse, rectangle, and polygon tools).

I actually found it a little fun using Paint.NET since it was my first foray into digital painting. Its also easy to learn, because I did not have to spend any time to get accustomed to the interface. Before you download this app, spend a few hours and look over a basic tutorial to familiarize yourself with the different tools and features available.

All that said, I do agree that Paint.NET 2.8 is probably more than old enough to be replaced. I’d suggest for people to put their trust in the AppImage package or some other release-specific package. Which people will use, I have no idea.

If I do find Paint.NET in all its old glory on my Windows 7 machine, then I’ll need to start looking for the best way to uninstall it (I have a plugin that would work for this, but I’d have to modify it a bit). Then I’ll be the one to test out the issue on my systems until RpD comes along.

The idea of a free Photoshop alternative is not a new one. After all, GIMP was created during the rush after Paint.NET v1.0 came out in 2004. There is good reason why so many people use Paint.NET over GIMP; it has a much friendlier UI, it is easier to use, it is easier to understand and best of all, it is free. All of this makes it a million times better than Photoshop or GIMP.

Who is Jeff Atwood? Jeff Atwood is a co-founder and CTO of Stackoverflow.com, the largest community driven Q&A website on the Internet. Jeff Atwood is a developer, entrepreneur, speaker, and blogger. I’ve been watching Jeff’s career for years and I’m always amazed at the hard work and determination he’s put into his business ventures. Jeff also uses Paint.NET to create photomanipulation work.

A Paint.NET user can, with the help of the Interoperable File format, produce files with a.NET v2.0 compatible Framework. There are currently only three different “versions” of the Framework. So, by the very nature of the product, Paint.NET should run on all Windows versions that I currently support, i.e. XP, Vista, 7, and 8. The question is: Will the Paint.NET team support new Windows versions in the future? After all, if they do, I just might be able to update my older machines. It sure would be nice if I could do all of my editing on a Windows 8 tablet.

Photoshop does a great job of editing images, but Adobe’s application lacks some of the features necessary to work in complex projects, such as seamlessly modifying the colors, curves, and fills of multiple images at the same time and working with layers of information. Paint.NET was created to fill in these gaps to bring color editing to the masses. Now Paint.NET has it’s own image editing features that makes it a solid choice for editing:

The Gradient tool allows you to create a gradient, by either dragging a color from a Gradient palette or by creating a custom gradient by copying a color, pattern, or gradient from a photo. Gradient blend modes allow you to control how the gradient is composed. You can choose to add colors, remove colors, or move colors to a new location to create custom gradients. Blend modes are new in Paint.NET and can be found in the Color Picker palette.

Ive been working on Paint.NET for three years, and with each update it had gotten significantly better. To that end, it was time to change over to a new release model, but also to switch to Linux as my main desktop OS. This allowed me to write all my code natively and in C#, and made most of my work environment portable on Windows, Linux and Mac, the typical client platforms for both Paint.NET and Paint.NET Pro. I decided it was time to start working on the next release while I still had the engineering time and motivation I had then.

I released Paint.NET v3.21.x last week on Windows, Linux and Mac. It has been a great success, and seeing as it is the first release that successfully runs on Linux, and under Wine on Windows and Mac, I decided to do a major update for v3.22.
